Macro photography opens up an entirely new world - one that often goes unnoticed by the naked eye. But beyond capturing tiny subjects lies a deeper, more powerful approach: creative interpretation.
This 2-day Creative Macro Photography Workshop is designed to help you move beyond documentation and into the realm of artistic expression. Conducted across two contrasting environments—urban wilderness at Maharashtra Nature Park and the misty forests of Matheran - this workshop focuses on using light, perspective, and experimentation to create striking, story-driven macro images.
Led by renowned creative macro photography Guru Anirban Dutta, this workshop is ideal for photographers looking to develop a unique visual style and elevate their macro photography through hands-on, immersive learning.

Most of us begin by focusing on sharpness, magnification, and subject isolation. While these are important, they often limit the creative potential of an image.
This workshop shifts that perspective entirely.
Through structured theory sessions and extensive field practice, participants will explore how to use light as a primary creative element. You will learn how to build layers, incorporate foregrounds, play with depth, and embrace imperfections that add character to your images.
From controlled environments in Maharashtra Nature Park to the dynamic and ever-changing conditions of Matheran, this workshop is designed to expose you to real-world scenarios where creativity becomes instinctive.
This is not about photographing rare subjects - it is about seeing ordinary subjects in extraordinary ways.

Things to carry:
Participants are advised to carry a camera with a macro lens or any lens capable of close focusing. A tripod can be useful but is not mandatory. External flashes, diffusers, reflectors, and creative accessories are encouraged for experimentation.
Comfortable clothing, hydration, and basic outdoor essentials are recommended. Participants should be prepared for extensive walking, field-based shooting, and continuous experimentation.
The workshop begins with a focused introduction to creative macro photography, setting the foundation for a shift in perspective from technical accuracy to artistic interpretation.
The morning session dives into the creative use of light, helping participants understand how light direction, intensity, and diffusion can dramatically influence an image. This is followed by discussions on various creative techniques such as using foreground elements, introducing motion, working with textures, and creating depth within macro frames.
Participants will also be introduced to the use of creative lenses and accessories, opening up new possibilities for visual storytelling.
After a lunch break, the session transitions into a hands-on practical experience within the park. As the light changes through the late afternoon and into sunset, participants will experiment with different techniques in real-time. The emphasis will be on adapting to evolving light conditions, refining compositions, and exploring creative possibilities.
The second day begins early with departure from Mumbai to Matheran via local train and shared cab pooling, setting the stage for a full day of immersive field learning.
The morning session focuses on shooting in soft natural light, working with dew, textures, and natural backgrounds. Participants will learn how to approach subjects with patience and integrate environmental elements into their compositions.
Following a lunch break, the workshop progresses into more advanced practical experimentation. As the light becomes stronger and more directional, participants will explore the creative use of shadows, contrast, and light shaping techniques.
The entire day is designed to help participants understand how light evolves over time and how to adapt creatively to different conditions. The workshop concludes with a group discussion and reflection session before returning to Mumbai by approximately 7 PM.
This workshop will transform the way you approach macro photography by shifting your focus from simply capturing subjects to creating compelling visual stories. You will learn how to observe and interpret light, use it to shape your compositions, and experiment with different techniques to achieve unique results.
By the end of the workshop, participants will gain confidence in handling real-world shooting conditions, develop a stronger creative vision, and produce images that stand out for their artistic depth and originality.
