Nestled in the Anamalai Hills of Tamil Nadu, Valparai is a remarkable landscape where tea plantations coexist with fragments of ancient rainforest. These forests support one of the largest remaining populations of the endangered Lion-tailed Macaque, making the region one of the finest places in the world to observe and photograph this extraordinary primate.
Beyond the macaques, Valparai offers excellent opportunities to photograph several iconic species of the Western Ghats, including the elegant Nilgiri Tahr, the striking Nilgiri Langur, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Indian Gaur, endemic birds, reptiles, and butterflies. The dramatic backdrop of mist-covered hills, rainforest fragments, and sprawling tea estates creates ideal conditions for both wildlife portraits and environmental storytelling.
This expedition is designed for photographers who wish to move beyond simple sightings and focus on behavior, interactions, habitat-based compositions, and conservation storytelling. With the guidance of a senior DCP photography mentor and an experienced local naturalist, participants will gain valuable insights into wildlife behavior, fieldcraft, and photographic techniques while exploring one of India’s most important biodiversity hotspots.
