Join DCP Expeditions for a 2 nights, 3 days Wildlife Photography Expedition to Rajaji National Park, one of North India’s most diverse and rewarding wildlife destinations. Nestled between the Shivalik Hills of the Himalayas and the Gangetic Plains, Rajaji’s rich mosaic of Sal forests, riverbeds, grasslands, and foothill landscapes supports an incredible diversity of wildlife, making it an outstanding destination for wildlife and nature photographers.

The expedition features 5 exciting open gypsy safaris, giving participants ample time to explore the park’s varied habitats in search of Asian Elephants, Leopards, Royal Bengal Tigers, Gaur, deer, and more than 300 species of birds. Accompanied by a Senior DCP Photography Mentor, participants will receive continuous on-field guidance covering wildlife behaviour, camera settings, autofocus techniques, composition, fieldcraft, and ethical wildlife photography. Sangram is a skilled wildlife photographer and a hardcore nature enthusiast. He has travelled extensively across the Indian geography photographing and documenting the magnanimous beauty of the natural history of the country in his camera. His images have been appreciated and acknowledged in various photography competitions, newspapers and Exhibitions. He has a special interest Bird photography. Sangram has done his Bachelors of Architecture from University of Pune. Apart from being a skilled photographer, he is also a talented Artist and has a great hand in painting, sketching and sculpting. He is a skilled trainer, one of the DCP Explorers and is currently associated with us as a Panel Expert and Consultant, Strategy Team.

This tour is Ex Rajaji. Most recommended is train. If you are traveling by flight, you can fly down to Dehradun. You are requested to arrive Dehradun as early as possible in the morning. On Day 1, so that you can reach the resort by 12 PM latest. However On Day 3, we strongly recommend booking a late-night train from Dehradun to Delhi after completing the evening safari.

**We recommend Flexi flight option for greater flexibility in unforeseen cancellations.

This tour is Ex Rajaji. The nearest major railway station is Dehradun Railway Station (DDN). Participants should arrive in Dehradun early on Day 1 and then travel onward to Rajaji by road. On Day 3, we recommend booking a late-night train from Dehradun to Delhi after completing the evening safari.

Getting Ready

Things to carry:

Carry a telephoto lens, preferably 400 mm or longer, for wildlife photography.
A versatile zoom lens is highly recommended to handle unexpected wildlife encounters and changing shooting situations.
Bring a wide-angle lens to capture landscapes, habitats, and environmental wildlife portraits.
Carry fully charged batteries for your camera and flash, along with battery chargers and spare batteries.
Bring sufficient memory cards, backup storage devices (HDD/SSD), and a laptop for image backup, if required.
A bean bag (filled with bajra, rice, or thermocol) is highly recommended for stable support while shooting from the safari vehicle.
Carry a large towel or cloth to protect your camera gear from dust during safaris.
A scarf, bandanna, or face covering is useful for protecting yourself from dust on the forest tracks.
Pack a light jacket or body warmer for the cool early morning safaris.
Don’t forget to carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and a cap for daytime protection.
It is advisable to bring a basic first-aid kit along with any personal medications.
Carry a mosquito repellent such as Odomos for added comfort during your stay.

Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival at Rajaji & First Safari

This tour is Ex-Rajaji. Participants are requested to arrive in Dehradun early on Day 1 so they can comfortably reach the resort by 12:00 PM.

After check-in, lunch, and a short briefing by the Senior DCP Photography Mentor, we will depart at around 1:30 PM for our first open gypsy safari in the Cheelawali Range. This introductory safari offers an excellent opportunity to explore Rajaji’s beautiful Sal forests, riverbeds, and grasslands while searching for Asian Elephants, Leopards, Royal Bengal Tigers, deer, and an impressive variety of birdlife.

We expect to return to the resort by approximately 6:30 PM. After refreshments and some time to unwind, the mentor will conduct an informal image review session, discuss the day’s sightings, and answer participants’ photography-related questions.

Dinner will be served at around 8:30 PM, followed by an overnight stay at the resort in preparation for the next day’s safari.

Day 2 – Morning & Afternoon Safaris

The day begins with a 5:30 AM wake-up call, followed by hot tea or coffee. We will leave the resort at around 6:00 AM and enter the park by approximately 6:30 AM, after completing the necessary entry formalities.

The morning safari continues until around 10:40 AM, providing excellent opportunities to photograph wildlife in the beautiful early morning light. After returning to the resort, participants can freshen up, enjoy breakfast, and spend some time relaxing.

Following an early lunch, we head out again at around 1:45 PM for the afternoon safari, which begins at approximately 2:00 PM. Exploring a different part of the reserve, this safari offers fresh opportunities to photograph wildlife as the light gradually softens towards sunset.

We return to the resort by around 5:45 PM. After refreshments, the Senior DCP Photography Mentor will conduct an image review session, discuss the day’s sightings, and share practical tips on image selection, editing, and storytelling.

Dinner will be served at around 8:30 PM, followed by an overnight stay at the resort.

Day 3 – Morning and Evening Safaris & Departure

Wake up early for the final day of the expedition, following the same reporting and park entry schedule as the previous morning. This safari provides another opportunity to explore Rajaji’s diverse habitats and photograph Asian Elephants, Leopards, deer, birds, and other wildlife in the beautiful morning light.

After returning to the resort, enjoy breakfast, spend some time reviewing your images, and relax before checking out. Following lunch, we will head out for the final safari of the expedition, making the most of the golden evening light and one last opportunity to capture memorable wildlife moments inside the park.

After the safari concludes, participants will collect their luggage and begin their onward journey towards Dehradun Railway Station. We recommend booking a late-night train or flight to allow sufficient time for the transfer after the safari.

Field Learnings

On-field learning from the experts is said to be one of the best methods of improving your skill-set.
