Experience the magical Eastern Himalayas on a 3 nights and 4 days Macro Photography Expedition to Sikkim. This tour takes you deep into one of India’s richest biodiversity hotspots, offering incredible opportunities to photograph the hidden macro world of the Himalayan forests.

The misty forests and lush landscapes of Sikkim come alive during the monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, revealing an astonishing diversity of butterflies, insects, spiders, mushrooms, amphibians, reptiles, and other tiny rainforest wonders. From beautifully camouflaged tree frogs and vibrant lanternflies to jewel-like beetles, praying mantises, and fascinating fungi, every trail presents exciting photographic possibilities for macro enthusiasts.

Getting Ready

Things to carry:

Camera / lenses / photo accessories

  • DSLR / Mirrorless Camera
  • Macro lens (carry a wide angle for experimental shots)
  • External flash and full charged batteries for the same
  • You should carry a diffuser for best results
  • Carry fully charged batteries for your camera / flash.
  • Carry battery charger. Carry extra pack of camera batteries
  • Carry backup memory cards and card reader - Laptop (not mandatory)

Clothings / protective gears / accessories

  • Torch - (If you have a head torch it would be useful)
  • Raingears to protect you and your gears (Ponchos / raincoats better)
  • Leech socks (multiple pairs) are mandatory requirements
  • Ankle high tough trekking shoes (Gumboots are best)

Itinerary

Drive to Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary and check-in at the homestay. After some rest and orientation, we begin our first twilight macro photography session around the camp and nearby forest patches. This session will focus on moths, insects, spiders, fungi, and other nocturnal rainforest subjects that become active after dusk. Dinner at the homestay.
Early morning drive to Dokchen for an immersive macro photography session. Enroute, we will photograph butterflies, insects, amphibians, spiders, and mushrooms around roadside vegetation, streams, forest trails, and farms. Packed lunch during the field session. Return to camp for lunch and short rest. In the evening, drive to Premlakha to explore the rich biodiversity around cardamom plantations, mossy forest trails, and streams. Look out for frogs, reptiles, spiders, and other fascinating rainforest macro subjects in the humid Himalayan environment. Back to camp for dinner.
Morning drive to Q Khola Waterfall and nearby Pasting region for macro photography. These moist forest habitats are excellent for photographing amphibians, insects, fungi, and rainforest textures in natural settings. Return to camp for lunch. In the evening, drive towards higher altitudes to photograph alpine macro subjects including Himalayan flowers, orchids, insects, and other unique high-altitude flora and fauna of the Eastern Himalayas. Dinner at the homestay followed by an optional night walk around camp for nocturnal macro subjects.
Post breakfast check-out and departure.

This expedition is open to beginners, hobbyists, nature lovers, and experienced photographers interested in exploring the fascinating macro biodiversity of the Eastern Himalayas.

Participants can photograph butterflies, insects, spiders, mushrooms, amphibians, reptiles, moths, orchids, and other tiny rainforest wonders found in the forests of Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary.

No prior experience is required. The expedition is designed as a learning-oriented experience where the DCP mentor will guide participants with camera settings, lighting techniques, composition, and fieldcraft.

Participants should be comfortable with short walks on forest trails, uneven terrain, and humid rainforest conditions. The walks are generally moderate and slow-paced, focused on photography.
