Itinerary

Participants will arrive and settle into the property before gathering for a short orientation with the DCP mentor. As evening sets in, we begin our first herping and macro photography session in the natural habitats around Sai Mika Park. The session will introduce participants to photographing Meghalaya’s fascinating nocturnal biodiversity, with opportunities to encounter amphibians, reptiles, insects, spiders and other small forest life. The emphasis will be on careful observation, responsible field practices, composition and effective use of artificial light for macro photography.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sai Mika Park.

The morning will begin with an intensive indoor macro photography session conducted by the DCP mentor. Participants will explore practical aspects of macro photography including flash and diffusion techniques, controlling highlights, depth of field, focusing methods, magnification, composition, backgrounds and creative lighting. The session is designed to prepare participants for making better photographs during subsequent field sessions.

Later in the day, we travel towards Mawlynnong and visit the iconic Living Root Bridge, an extraordinary example of the relationship between Meghalaya’s people and its rainforest ecosystem. As daylight fades, we explore the surrounding habitats through a dedicated herping session, searching for interesting macro subjects and practising techniques for photographing wildlife after dark.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sai Mika Park.

We begin well before sunrise and travel towards the Seven Sisters Falls area near Mawsmai. The dramatic cliffs, valleys, waterfalls, mist and rapidly changing morning light create excellent opportunities for landscape and environmental photography. Weather permitting, participants will photograph the Khasi Hills as the first light transforms the landscape.

The afternoon will provide time to rest and prepare for another extended evening in the field. Later, we explore the remarkable habitats around Mawphlang Sacred Forest and Sohiong. The evening herping session will focus on discovering and photographing Meghalaya’s nocturnal biodiversity while learning how to work creatively with flash, diffused light, environmental compositions and challenging low-light conditions.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sai Mika Park.

The morning takes us to the beautiful Garden of Caves, where waterfalls, forest streams, rock formations, moss-covered surfaces and lush vegetation offer a completely different set of photographic opportunities. We then continue towards Prut Falls, exploring compositions involving flowing water, forest landscapes, textures and intimate details of the environment.

Later in the day, we visit the spectacular Nohkalikai Falls, one of Meghalaya’s most iconic landscapes. Here, participants can experiment with wider compositions, changing light and environmental storytelling. After the landscape session, we return towards Sai Mika Park for our final night of herping and macro photography, providing another opportunity to apply the techniques developed throughout the expedition.

Dinner and overnight stay at Sai Mika Park.

After breakfast, we check out and begin our return journey, bringing the Meghalaya Macro Photography Expedition to a close. The expedition combines intensive macro photography and herping with selected landscape experiences, offering participants an opportunity to explore Meghalaya from both the smallest details of its rainforest biodiversity to the grandeur of its waterfalls and Khasi Hills landscapes.

Important Note: Meghalaya’s weather and wildlife activity can be highly unpredictable. Herping locations, sunrise sessions and other field activities may be modified by the DCP mentor depending on weather, accessibility, wildlife activity and local conditions to ensure the best possible photography experience.
