Embark on an immersive 2 nights 3 days Macro Photography Expedition to Amboli, one of the most fascinating biodiversity hotspots in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra. During the monsoon, the mist-covered forests of Amboli come alive with an extraordinary diversity of frogs, snakes, geckos, insects, spiders and other rainforest species, creating exceptional opportunities for macro and herpetofauna photography.

Guided by a DCP expert mentor, this carefully curated Amboli Macro Photography Expedition combines field exploration with practical photography learning. Participants will work on essential macro photography techniques including lighting, flash and diffuser control, composition, focusing techniques, field craft, understanding subject behaviour and creating photographs that go beyond simple documentation.

The lush monsoon landscape, moss-covered forest floor, rain-soaked vegetation and diverse microhabitats provide an ideal setting to experiment with both intimate close-ups and environmental macro photography. Participants will also learn to observe subjects responsibly, understand their ecological context and approach sensitive amphibians and reptiles with appropriate field discipline.

Founder And Director

Dr Caesar Sengupta is a globally acclaimed Wildlife Conservation Photographer, a National Geographic acknowledged educator, freelance writer and trainer. He is a Canon India EOS Maestro, a qualified MD Medical Microbiologist and is also the Founder Director of DCP Expeditions LLP, which is India's one of the largest Wildlife, Nature and Travel Photography Community Platform, operating since 2010 and now present in 21 cities across India. He conducts regular photography workshops and field expeditions across the country. He has travelled far and wide across Indian geography and beyond. He has the timeless distinction of having a frog species discovered in 2014 named after him - The Indosylvirana caesari also known otherwise as the Maharashtra Golden Backed Frog. Through his photography, he tries to depict the untold and unseen beauties of nature.

The nearest Airport to Amboli lies in Goa, which has local flights coming in from Mumbai and Bangalore.

If one prefers the Railway, they would find that Amboli is well connected through Railways. Book a train to Kudal and we will arrange for your pick-up and drop from and to Kudal.

Amboli is also connected to Mumbai, Pune and Goa by road, since many tourist buses, taxis and three wheeled Vehicles run on the road. One may hire a tourist bus from Mumbai which is about 525kms away.

Itinerary

Day 1

The first glimpse of Amboli introduces us to the magical atmosphere of a monsoon rainforest, with towering trees, dense vegetation, moss-covered branches, creepers and mist drifting through the forest. During the rains, almost every corner comes alive with fascinating forms of life, making Amboli one of the most exciting destinations for macro photography in the Western Ghats.

Amboli is located approximately 50 km from Kudal Railway Station. Depending on the arrival time of the train at Kudal, we will have lunch en route to Amboli before proceeding to the resort. After completing the check-in formalities, participants will have some time to rest and prepare their photography equipment for the evening field session.

At approximately 6:30 PM, we will begin our first macro photography exploration in and around the garden area near the resort. As darkness sets in, we will search for frogs, snakes, insects, spiders and other interesting macro subjects while getting accustomed to photographing under low-light and monsoon conditions. The session will also introduce participants to practical techniques involving flash, diffusers, composition and responsible field photography.

We will return by approximately 9:00 PM for dinner. Subject to weather conditions, if it is not raining, we will head out again after dinner to search for and photograph bioluminescent fungi, one of the fascinating nocturnal highlights of the Amboli monsoon.

Day 2

Amboli is one of the most fascinating biodiversity hotspots of the Western Ghats, with its monsoon forests supporting an extraordinary diversity of amphibians, reptiles, insects, spiders, wildflowers and other smaller life forms. The combination of dense vegetation, seasonal streams, mist and abundant rainfall creates excellent conditions for exploring and photographing the region’s remarkable herpetofauna.

After breakfast, we will head towards Choukul Road for a guided daytime field exploration. Our primary focus will be searching for Malabar Pit Vipers, Vine Snakes and other reptiles and macro subjects that inhabit the vegetation and forest edges along this stretch. Participants will work on creative macro photography techniques, including compositions that showcase the subject as well as its surrounding habitat.

We will return to the resort for lunch and some rest before beginning our evening session.

As darkness approaches, we will once again explore the garden area around the resort, when amphibian activity usually increases considerably. We will look for calling Amboli Bush Frogs, Bombay Bush Frogs, Malabar Gliding Frogs and several other frogs, reptiles and nocturnal macro subjects. The session will focus on photographing behaviour, experimenting with lighting and creating both intimate close-ups and wider environmental compositions.

Species sightings and field activities will remain subject to prevailing weather conditions and natural wildlife activity.

Day 3

On the final morning of the expedition, we will head out for one last field session along Mahadevgarh Road or Choukul Road, depending on prevailing weather conditions and recent wildlife activity. We will explore suitable forest edges and microhabitats looking for snakes, crabs, geckos, frogs, insects and other interesting macro photography subjects.

This final session will provide another opportunity to practise creative macro photography techniques, work with natural surroundings and create both close-up portraits and wider habitat-oriented images.

We will return to the resort by approximately 11:00 AM, following which participants can freshen up, complete the check-out formalities and get ready for the drop back to Kudal. With this, our Amboli Macro Photography Expedition comes to an end.
