Amboli - Macro Photography Expedition, July 2026 (Batch 2)

Amboli is among the most fascinating biodiversity hotspots of the Western Ghats, with its monsoon forests supporting an exceptional variety of amphibians, reptiles, insects, spiders, wildflowers and other smaller life forms. Dense vegetation, seasonal streams, persistent mist and heavy monsoon rainfall create ideal habitats for exploring and photographing Amboli’s remarkable herpetofauna and macro biodiversity. After breakfast, we will proceed towards Choukul Road for a guided daytime macro photography field session. Our primary focus will be searching for Malabar Pit Vipers, Vine Snakes and other reptiles and interesting macro subjects found along the vegetation, forest edges and roadside habitats. Participants will explore creative macro photography techniques, including wide-angle close-up compositions that place the subject within its natural habitat and help create stronger environmental stories. We will return to Whistling Woods for lunch, followed by some time to rest, review images and prepare for the evening photography session. As darkness sets in, we will once again explore the garden and surrounding habitats near the resort, when amphibian and nocturnal wildlife activity generally increases. We will search for calling Amboli Bush Frogs, Bombay Bush Frogs, Malabar Gliding Frogs and several other frogs, reptiles and nocturnal macro subjects. The session will focus on photographing natural behaviour, experimenting with external flash and creative lighting, and producing both detailed close-ups and wider environmental macro compositions. All species sightings and field activities will depend on prevailing weather conditions and natural wildlife movement and activity. On the final morning of our Amboli Macro Photography Expedition, we will head out for one last guided field session along Mahadevgarh Road or Choukul Road, depending on the prevailing weather conditions and recent wildlife activity. We will explore promising forest edges, roadside vegetation and suitable microhabitats in search of snakes, crabs, geckos, frogs, insects and other fascinating macro photography subjects found across Amboli. This final field session will offer another opportunity to practise creative macro photography techniques, experiment with compositions and incorporate the surrounding rainforest habitat into our images. Participants can work on both intimate close-up portraits and wider environmental macro photographs that showcase the subject within its natural surroundings. We will return to the resort by approximately 11:00 AM. Participants can then freshen up, complete the check-out formalities and prepare for the drop back to Kudal. With some memorable encounters and a deeper understanding of creative macro photography in the Western Ghats, our Amboli Macro Photography Expedition comes to an end.
