Sri Lanka is one of South Asia’s richest biodiversity hotspots, hosting 479 species of birds, including 34 endemic species, along with a remarkable diversity of reptiles, amphibians, insects, and rainforest wildlife. The island’s varied climatic zones — the dry zone, wet zone, and central hill zone - create distinct ecosystems that support a wide range of unique species.
Join DCP Expeditions on a 6 Nights / 7 Days Macro & Wildlife Photography Expedition in Sri Lanka, exploring three of the island’s most biodiverse rainforest landscapes — Knuckles Forest Reserve, Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, and the lesser-known Matara rainforest region at Kirala Kele Sanctuary.
The journey begins in Colombo, from where we travel to the misty forests of Knuckles Forest Reserve, a UNESCO-recognized biodiversity hotspot. This region hosts 14 of Sri Lanka’s endemic bird species, along with fascinating amphibians and reptiles such as the leaf-nosed lizard, hump-nosed lizard, and several endemic frogs. The dense forest microhabitats make Knuckles an outstanding location for both macro wildlife photography and bird photography.
The expedition then moves to Udawatta Kele Sanctuary, a historic rainforest reserve known for its rich flora and fauna. The sanctuary supports over 400 plant species, 32 species of butterflies, and more than 80 species of birds, including endemics like Layard’s Parakeet and the Yellow-fronted Barbet. The forest trails here provide excellent opportunities for photographing reptiles, amphibians, insects, and colourful birdlife in beautiful filtered forest light.
Our final destination takes us to the lesser-explored Matara rainforest region in southern Sri Lanka, particularly the wetlands and forest patches around Kirala Kele Sanctuary. This hidden ecosystem offers rewarding opportunities to photograph rare reptiles, amphibians, and tropical birds in a quiet, undisturbed environment rarely visited by photographers.
Throughout the expedition, DCP’s expert photography mentor and experienced local naturalists will guide you in tracking wildlife, understanding behaviour, and refining your photography techniques — from macro lighting and subject isolation to composition and storytelling in rainforest conditions.
Whether you are looking to photograph endemic reptiles and amphibians, capture colourful tropical birds, or expand your macro wildlife portfolio, this Sri Lanka expedition offers a unique blend of learning, exploration, and exceptional photographic opportunities.
