This Costa Rica Wildlife Photography Expedition is carefully designed to explore multiple ecosystems across different altitudes, each offering unique species and distinct photographic conditions. As we travel from lowland tropical rainforests to mid-elevation cloud forests and volcanic highlands, you will experience dramatic changes in landscape, climate, and biodiversity.
This 10-day Costa Rica Wildlife Photography Expedition is strategically crafted to cover a wide range of habitats — from the Central Valley to the Pacific coast, Talamanca cloud forests, Caribbean slope rainforests, and northern wetlands. The country’s mountainous spine creates dramatic altitude transitions, resulting in varied microclimates ranging from hot and humid lowlands to cool, mist-covered high elevations. These shifts bring entirely different bird communities, reptiles, amphibians, and photographic conditions.

Shivayogi is a passionate nature photographer and former IT professional whose journey reflects a profound love for both technology and the natural world. With a background in IT Consulting, Project & Program Management. Shivayogi spent over 22 years honing technical skills along with global exposure that laid the groundwork for a unique career transition.While working in the tech industry, he often found solace in the great outdoors, exploring local parks and trails with a camera in hand. This passion ignited a desire to capture the beauty of nature and share it with others, leading him to pursue photography more seriously.In 2017, Shivayogi boldly decided to embrace the life of a nature photographer while wearing a corporate hat. He specializes in both wildlife (especially bird photography) and landscapes using a keen eye for detail and composition to create stunning images that tell stories of the natural environment.His work has been featured in SmartPhotography, SaveUs, and many online platforms including Canon, and he is committed to promoting conservation efforts through his photography. If you hold a valid US Business Visa (B1/B2) with at least 6 months validity, you may enter Costa Rica visa-free (subject to current regulations). Costa Rica Embassy in New Delhi can issue tourist visas if required. Our team will assist.
Arrive at San José International Airport where you will be received by our local team and transferred to your hotel near the airport. The day is intentionally kept light to help you recover from long international travel while easing into tropical photography. Depending on arrival time, we begin with controlled natural-light hummingbird photography and opportunities to photograph small endemic bird species in a productive setting. After an early breakfast, travel toward the Central Pacific coast. The drive itself becomes part of the experience as landscapes transition from highland valleys to tropical lowland forest.
Upon reaching the coast, we embark on a boat-based wildlife photography session along the Tárcoles River, famous for its large American crocodiles and rich diversity of waterbirds and raptors. Open riverbanks provide clean backgrounds and dynamic shooting angles.
In the afternoon, continue southward toward the foothills of the Talamanca region.

Ascend into the cool, mist-laden cloud forests of the Talamanca Mountain Range, one of Costa Rica’s richest highland ecosystems. Forest trails and garden setups allow access to hummingbirds, tanagers, and a variety of montane species.
The change in altitude brings noticeably cooler temperatures and a completely different bird community, offering dramatic variation in your photographic portfolio.

Begin the day early in search of the iconic Resplendent Quetzal in its natural habitat. This region supports one of the healthiest populations of quetzals in Costa Rica, offering rewarding opportunities for habitat-based photography.
Later in the day, visit carefully curated bird gardens designed for ethical, eye-level photography. These setups provide clean backgrounds and ideal lighting for capturing vibrant montane birds and macro subjects.

Descend toward the Caribbean slope, entering a warmer, more humid tropical rainforest ecosystem. This transition introduces a completely new biodiversity profile including amphibians, reptiles, insects, and colourful lowland birds.
We stop at specialized hummingbird locations before reaching a renowned rainforest garden famous for macro and amphibian photography. An optional night photography session allows opportunities for nocturnal species.

Spend a full day in the Caribbean lowland rainforest exploring garden decks and forest edges known for controlled, eye-level bird photography. These setups allow you to work on lighting control, composition refinement, and behaviour-based storytelling.

Travel north into the Sarapiquí lowlands, an important biological corridor rich in forest birdlife. Visit rainforest-edge locations where scarlet macaws, toucans, and hummingbirds are often active.
By late afternoon, arrive in one of Costa Rica’s most biodiverse wetland regions, surrounded by primary rainforest.

A full photography day in wetland and rainforest habitats. Specialized decks and hides provide excellent vantage points for raptors and wetland birds.
An optional night session offers a rare opportunity to photograph bats and nocturnal mammals under guided conditions.

Begin the morning with relaxed bird photography from elevated decks offering close-range opportunities for tanagers, toucans, and forest species. This controlled environment allows refinement of composition and behavioural shots.
Later in the day, travel back to the Central Valley near the airport in preparation for departure.

Private transfer to San José International Airport for your onward international flight. The expedition concludes with a diverse tropical portfolio spanning cloud forests, rainforests, wetlands, and coastal ecosystems.

Section 206C(G) of Income tax act, 1961 mandates tour package operators selling overseas packages to collect TCS from the individuals travelling abroad. As announced in budget 2025, the threshold limit of remittances (under LRS) made to overseas tour package sellers is Rs. 10 lakh (except for medical and educational expenses). TCS is 5% below threshold and 20% above the threshold. As a mandate, we will therefore, be collecting TCS as per the mentioned threshold and depositing to Govt within the deadline. No. The tour is designed to support photographers at all levels. Your DCP mentor will provide guidance on camera settings, exposure control, focus techniques, and composition in rainforest and cloud forest conditions.
The expedition focuses primarily on bird photography, macro photography, and rainforest wildlife. Subjects include hummingbirds, tanagers, toucans, quetzals, raptors, frogs, snakes, insects, and nocturnal species.
The trip involves moderate walking on forest trails and some light trekking. Most photography locations are accessible, but participants should be comfortable walking for short to moderate durations.
Costa Rica has varied microclimates. Lowland rainforests are typically warm and humid, while cloud forests at higher elevations can be cool, especially in early mornings. Rain is always possible in tropical regions, so waterproof gear is recommended.
A telephoto lens of 400mm to 600mm is highly recommended for bird photography. A macro lens with flash and diffuser is ideal for amphibians and insects. A wide-angle lens can be useful for landscapes and environmental shots.
