Overview

Experience a completely different side of Bhigwan with DCP Expeditions during the magical monsoon season. While Bhigwan is celebrated across India for its winter flamingos, the rains transform this landscape into a lush mosaic of wetlands, grasslands, farmlands, and seasonal water bodies teeming with breeding birds, dramatic skies, and vibrant monsoon life.

This specially curated monsoon bird photography expedition is designed for photographers, birders, and nature enthusiasts who wish to explore the raw beauty of Bhigwan during the rains. From Jacobin Cuckoos announcing the monsoon to lapwings, larks, quails, owls, raptors, and wetland birds active in breeding plumage, this tour offers exceptional opportunities for behavioral documentation and storytelling-driven photography.

The expedition combines boat-based bird photography, shore-side exploration, local countryside birding, and immersive field learning under the guidance of an experienced DCP bird photography mentor.

About The Tour

Unlike the winter season that revolves around migratory congregations, monsoon birding in Bhigwan is about behavior, atmosphere, and diversity. The changing skies, dramatic cloud formations, fresh green landscapes, and active breeding season create a unique visual experience for photographers.

Participants will explore the wetland edges and surrounding countryside in search of monsoon specialties including Jacobin Cuckoo, Indian Courser, Yellow-wattled Lapwing, quails, owls, raptors, babblers, larks, grassbirds, and numerous wetland species. The wetlands around Bhigwan also continue to support flamingos, storks, ibises, spoonbills, and other waterbirds during this period.

One of the highlights of this expedition is the opportunity to photograph birds in softer monsoon light conditions, often with beautiful reflections, moody skies, rain textures, and habitat-rich compositions that are very different from conventional bird portraits.

This short-format monsoon photography getaway is ideal for beginners and experienced photographers alike, offering a refreshing combination of birding, fieldcraft, storytelling, and creative nature photography.

Possible sightings include:

Painted Francolin, Grey Francolin, Rain Quail, Jungle Bush Quail, Rock Bush Quail, Barred Buttonquail, Small Buttonquail, Yellow-legged Buttonquail, Greater Flamingo, Painted Stork, Woolly-necked Stork, Red-naped Ibis, Eurasian Spoonbill, Jacobin Cuckoo, Indian Courser, Yellow-wattled Lapwing, Sirkeer Malkoha, Blue-faced Malkoha, Red-necked Falcon, Bonelli’s Eagle, Indian Eagle-Owl, Mottled Wood Owl, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Painted Sandgrouse, Broad-tailed Grassbird, Crested Bunting, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Shikra etc. Other possible sightings include Indian foe, Gray wolf, Hyena, Indian guzzle, Jackal, Jungal cat, Chameleon, Palm civet.

Why Join This Monsoon Expedition?

Bhigwan during the monsoon is one of Maharashtra’s most underrated seasonal birding destinations. The rains bring dramatic transformations to the wetlands and surrounding habitats, offering photographers opportunities that are very different from the winter flamingo season. This expedition is perfect for photographers looking to explore mood, habitat, behavior, weather, and storytelling in bird photography while experiencing the refreshing atmosphere of the monsoon countryside.

The evening session includes a guided boat ride offering excellent opportunities to photograph wetland birds in beautiful monsoon light. Participants can expect opportunities for eye-level photography, behavioral documentation, reflections, and dramatic sunset silhouettes against rain-filled skies.

After sunset, we return to the stay for dinner, photography discussions, image reviews, and overnight halt.

The second day begins with an early morning birding and photography session around Bhigwan and nearby countryside habitats. Depending on weather and bird activity, we will explore local roads and open habitats known for monsoon species including lapwings, larks, cuckoos, raptors, grassland birds, and wetland specialists.

This was my first visit to Bhigwan and the experience was reaaly mesmerizing!! The overall tour was arranged very well. The best part was the experience sharing from the DCP Expert panel and also from the participants. The expert panel shared some key tips and tricks which were really useful while shooting the birds in the field. Bhigwan is truly Bharatpur of Maharashtra. I really fall in love of nature's beauty. Thanks to DCP and No filter by Indigo for arranging the tour in collaboration.

Great opportunity to discover variety of birds with superb mentorship. The place is packed with birds in action. Yogesh ji has plethora of knowledge and knows every nook and corner of the place. Loved it. Only possible area of improvement is the vehicle. It’s too hot these days hence AC bus would be preferable. Otherwise a wonderful trip. Thanks
