Namibia - Landscape, Astro and Creative Nature Photography Expedition, June 2027

After breakfast, begin the self-drive journey south towards Keetmanshoop. The drive introduces participants to Namibia’s expansive scenery, open roads, arid landscapes, and distant mountain formations.

There will be suitable comfort and photography stops along the way, depending on the available time and prevailing conditions. The changing scenery provides an introduction to travel and environmental photography, with opportunities to observe Namibia’s distinctive colours, textures, settlements, and vast open spaces.

Upon arrival in Keetmanshoop, check in at the guesthouse and prepare for the following day’s photography sessions at the Quiver Tree Forest. Subject to arrival time and local conditions, the evening may be used for an introductory photography session in the surrounding landscape.

Today is dedicated to photographing the remarkable landscapes surrounding Keetmanshoop, with a special focus on the Quiver Tree Forest. The distinctive shapes of the quiver trees, combined with the rocky terrain, provide excellent opportunities to explore composition, perspective, patterns, textures, silhouettes, and visual storytelling.

The photography sessions will be planned around favourable light. Participants will learn how to isolate individual trees, use natural elements to frame subjects, create a sense of scale, and work with both wide-angle and compressed landscape compositions.

As the sun begins to set, the warm light can transform the trees and rocks into dramatic photographic subjects. After nightfall, weather and sky conditions permitting, the location may offer opportunities for astrophotography. Participants can experiment with quiver trees and rocky formations as foregrounds for stars, the Milky Way, and creative night-sky compositions.

The mentors will provide hands-on guidance with focusing in darkness, selecting suitable exposure settings, reducing noise, composing night landscapes, and maintaining proper etiquette during group astrophotography sessions.

After breakfast, depart Keetmanshoop and continue towards Sesriem, the gateway to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei. Today’s journey passes through remote desert landscapes characterised by open plains, rugged terrain, dry riverbeds, isolated settlements, and changing geological formations.

Photography stops may be made at suitable locations, depending on the road, weather, available light, and overall travel schedule. Participants can use the journey to practise environmental photography, panoramic compositions, roadscapes, minimalist frames, and images that communicate the scale and solitude of Namibia.

Arrive at Dead Valley Lodge and check in. The remainder of the day will be used to settle into the desert environment, prepare equipment, charge batteries, and discuss the photographic plan for Sossusvlei and Deadvlei.

The mentors will also provide guidance on lens selection, protecting equipment from sand and dust, managing high-contrast desert light, and preparing for early-morning photography.

Begin the day early to experience the remarkable desert landscapes of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei in favourable morning light. The enormous red dunes, sweeping ridgelines, clay pans, and shifting shadows provide endless possibilities for landscape and creative nature photography.

At Sossusvlei, participants can work with curves, patterns, scale, colour, light, and shadow. The mentors will demonstrate how changes in viewpoint and focal length can transform the same landscape—from expansive wide-angle scenes to tightly framed abstract compositions.

Continue to Deadvlei, one of Namibia’s most extraordinary photographic locations. Its pale clay surface, dark camel thorn trees, and surrounding orange dunes create striking contrasts and graphic compositions. The session will focus on visual balance, negative space, subject separation, minimalist photography, and creating original interpretations of an iconic location.

The day also includes a visit to Sesriem Canyon, where the narrow passages, layered rock surfaces, and directional light provide a different set of creative opportunities.

Later, enjoy a scenic Sossusvlei sunset drive. As the sun moves lower, the dunes change colour and their shadows become more pronounced, creating dramatic opportunities for evening landscapes and abstract studies of the desert.

Participants may begin the day with an optional scenic helicopter flight over Sossusvlei, subject to weather, availability, permissions, and local operating conditions.

The flight offers an extraordinary aerial perspective of the Namib Desert. From above, the dunes reveal sweeping curves, repeating patterns, sculpted ridgelines, dry river systems, and constantly changing relationships between light and shadow. Participants taking the flight will receive guidance on camera preparation, shutter-speed selection, lens choice, avoiding reflections, and composing through the aircraft window.

The helicopter flight is optional and will be available at an additional cost.

After breakfast and completion of the morning activities, depart Sesriem and drive towards Swakopmund. The journey reveals a gradual transition from the interior desert to the Atlantic coast, offering changing landscapes and possible photography stops along the way.

Upon arrival, check in at the hotel and enjoy the cooler coastal atmosphere of Swakopmund. Depending on the arrival time and prevailing conditions, participants may explore the nearby beachfront or town surroundings for travel, architectural, coastal, or blue-hour photography.

After breakfast, set out for a half-day excursion to Sandwich Harbour in a dedicated 4x4 vehicle. This remarkable coastal landscape is known for its enormous dunes descending towards the Atlantic Ocean, creating a dramatic meeting point between sand and sea.

The excursion offers excellent opportunities to photograph sweeping coastal vistas, dune patterns, reflections, textures, changing light, and the contrast between the desert and the ocean. Participants can experiment with wide-angle landscapes, telephoto compression, minimalist compositions, and creative images involving movement, lines, and natural patterns.

After completing the Sandwich Harbour excursion, return to Swakopmund and continue the self-drive journey to Spitzkoppe.

Arrive at Spitzkoppe and check in at the lodge. Depending on the arrival time and available light, participants may photograph the granite peaks and boulder formations during the late afternoon or evening. The warm light brings out the colour, shape, and texture of the ancient rocks, creating beautiful opportunities for landscape photography.

After dark, and subject to clear skies and suitable conditions, participants may prepare for an astrophotography session featuring Spitzkoppe’s rock formations beneath the stars.

The day may begin before sunrise with a final photography session at Spitzkoppe. The granite peaks, natural arches, rounded boulders, and open desert plains offer outstanding foregrounds for dawn landscapes.

Participants can work with changing light, layered compositions, natural frames, foreground interest, panoramic images, and creative perspectives. This session will also provide an opportunity to review and apply the photographic techniques explored throughout the expedition.

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Windhoek. Suitable stops may be made along the route for rest, refreshments, and photography, depending on time and road conditions.

Upon arrival in Windhoek, check in at the hotel and spend the final evening relaxing, backing up images, and sharing experiences from the expedition. The mentors may conduct an informal image discussion or review, subject to the arrival schedule and available time.

Return the self-drive vehicles, complete the airport formalities, and depart Namibia with a diverse collection of photographs and memorable experiences from its deserts, ancient trees, dramatic coastline, granite formations, and spectacular night skies.
